Since 2004, Ateneo Art Wards have been giving to Filipino visual artists below the age of 36 for outstanding works in an exhibition between 2 May of the previous year and 1 May of the current year. This recognition is given to honour the memory of Fernando Zobel de Ayala (192401994), the founding benefactor of the museum, who supported young Filipino visual artists and through his patronage left an indelible mark in Philippine art history.

From the 12 shortlisted exhibitions or artworks in an exhibition, 3 are chosen for the Ateneo Art Awards. The winners are invited to apply for international residency grants funded by the Ateneo Art Gallery and its partner institutions; La Trobe University Visual Art Centre in Bendigo, Australia, Artesan Gallery in Singapore and Liverpool Hope University in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

2013 marks the 10th year of the Ateneo Art Awards, as the Ateneo Art Gallery prepares to distinguish the most significant works from the previous year, this milestone allows the museum to look back and celebrate the best of contemporary Philippine art over the past decade. The barometer for excellence that is the Awards tethers time in the history it has written, celebrating works that have stood out amidst an artistic climate where enduring passion meets over-changing values. Continuing the pioneering spark of the Gallery’s founding benefactor Fernando Zobel de Ayala in recognising the venue and vigour of youth, the Ateneo Art Awards remains steadfast, marching in place as it moves forward, marking time as the future unfolds.
